Water System: Deionization (DI)

Deionization, also known as demineralization, is the process of removing mineral (inorganic) ions (cations and anions) from water and exchanging them with hydrogen (H +) and hydroxide (OH -) to produce a high purity water that is similar to distilled water.

Deionization is a physical process which uses specially manufactured ion exchange resins which bind to and filter out the mineral salts from water. Deionization does not significantly remove uncharged organic molecules, viruses or bacteria but rather traps it in the resin.

A typical deionization system comprises of one or more ion exchange column which will contain a strong cation unit and a strong anion unit. Since resins are exhausted in the exchange process, it has to be regenerated with hydrogen and hydroxide. The source of hydrogen is strong acid and the source of hydroxide is strong base.

A deionization system can use mixed bed demineralizers (an intimate mixture of strongly acidic cation and strongly basic anion resins in this same column). A typical mixed bed demineralizer will rinse down to low conductivity after regeneration. These values will remain low and nearly constant during the service cycle, but when the resin is exhausted, values will increase concurrently.

Waterworks Technologies offers a range of deionization technology. Our projects have included a double pass reverse osmosis system and deionization for a bottling plant in Oman.
