Wastewater System: Sludge Processing

Waterworks provides a wide variety of sludge processing systems custom designed according to specific needs. In addition to aerobic digesters, Waterworks supplies plate and frame type filter presses, sludge dryers, centrifuges and drying beds. The selection of a sludge dewatering process is specific to its location and the nature of sludge.

Aerobic Sludge Digesters

Waterworks utilizes aerobic sludge digesters to concentrate sludge to levels of 3 to 5 percent. Aerobic digesters ensure a reduction in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to an acceptable level prior to disposal. In addition to reducing the mass of sludge to be disposed of, the aerobic process avoids generation of noxious odors and gases associated with anaerobic methods. Fully aerated sludge digesters allow installations within existing buildings without the expensive modifications or special ventilation.

Filter Press Systems

Sludge dewatering using a plate and frame type filter press can reduce the volume of thickened sludge by more than 90 percent. This reduces disposal costs, and in many cases allows for final disposal to landfill. Depending on the nature of wastewater treated, pressed sludge can be recycled as a soil conditioner in agricultural areas.

Sludge Drying Beds

When land is available, sludge drying beds may provide the least expensive method for dewatering waste sludge. Waterworks has supplied sludge dewatering beds to many customers in Canada, the USA, and other locations around the world.

Sludge Dryers

Gas fired sludge dryers achieve a final concentration of 80 to 85% solids by weight. By removing most of the moisture sludge becomes a small, dense, easily transportable solid. Waterworks has supplied sludge dryers as part of our ongoing operations at projects internationally.
